I am trying to establish the existence of one Frank Laughton, circa
1875, in the State of Pennsylvania. I have found a John Laughton
in the Beaver County tax records, but everything seems to end there. Can
someone help?
Good site - do you have any information on the Laughtons of Scotland,
i.e. the Orkney Islands? This is where my great-great-grandfather
John was born in 1793. He was a master mariner and came to Australia
in early 1800's. There was also a son of his, Thomas, who joined
the Hudson Bay Co. in the later 1800s, and was never heard from again.
I live in Nowra, NSW, Austrlia, but was born in Tasmania where Capt. John
Laughton settled. I like cats, too - I have 3 - Wispa, a chinchilla
aged 16, Whitey a silver-grey tabby, and his sister, Blackie - both shorthairs
and all very spoiled!
Hi to all Laughtons! I never realised that there are so many Laughtons

I have had more fun reading about all the Laughtons on the Laughton

Hi , Just had to check out your Web-Site , you all having a great name

Dear Laughton family, I jus thought I'd write as I live
in a village called Laughton en-le morthen, which you have mentioned on
your excellent website. I was just browsing the web, looking
for information about the actor Charles Laughton, when I found your website
and was pleased to see a link with the village in which I have always
lived. When I noticed where you lived, and that you had some interest in
my village it felt good and unusual at the same time. I wondered if you
have any history in my village? I know that many of the Pilgrim Fathers
originate from nearby!? Anyway, if there is anything more you would like
to know about my village, ease let me know and I will be pleased to help.Yours
sincerely, James

Hi All. My grand father, David Laughton, born in county Cork Ireland
in the late 1800's, believed to have emigrated to the UK when aproximately
5 years
I came across this page when I checking out domaine names. I know virtually
nothing about the Laughton side of my family. My father's name was George
Laughton. He was born in 1910 in Yuma, Arizona. He and my mother separated
when I was very young (at the beginnig of World War II). Presumably, he
had a very large family ... so, I probably have many cousins out there.
Also, I have a Laughton half brother somewhere. My sister's name is Dolores
Laughton ahmasebbi. If anyone knows about the cousins or half brother I'd
like to hear.
Isn't high tech wonderful. My grandfather's name was John Laughton
who emigrated from the Orkney Islands at the turn of the last century,
settling in Fort William (now Thunder Bay) Ontario. He had two sons,
Bill Laughton who moved to the Los Angeles area in the 1950's, and John
Carrel who still lives in Thunder Bay. John was adopted as an infant;
hence the name Carrel. My Uncle Bill's widow Alexina Laughton still lives
in California. Since they had two daughters, Alexina is the only
one left with the Orkney Laughton name in North America. John Laughton,
my grandfather, came from a farm in Orkney called East'rbist'r. We
have

Just having been returned to the Laughton family fold, I have always
yearned to know where I came from. Messing around on the computer one day
I typed in the name of the church where all my ancestors are buried, hoping
to have a look at a picture of it; and I found this page. I now know that
I am related to hell of alot of you and infact "that church" is the one
in Laughton-le-Morth! My blood is part of the really old line of Laughton's
hailing from North Yorkshire. Somewhere
My dads name is Geoffrey Laughton. He's the grandson of William
Miller Laughton and the great grandson of Hunter Hackett Laughton, of Wasington
D.C. and Lurray, VA, respectively. These Laughtons have been in California
since 1936. I am the youngest and, currently, the last male from
our family's line. I hope someday to have a son to carry the name
on. My grand-uncle, William Laughton, Jr. also lives in Quincy, MA.
Anyone got a Laughton male who is the right age to have fathered a son
in 1824, either in Leeds County, Canada West, or somewhere in the northern
US? He may have been married to ANNE L. who, in turn, may have been born
in Scotland (Orkneys???) in 1795. Responses to the e-mail address would
be very welcome.

Of course I was interested in any history of the name "Laughton".
I was just wondering about my father? His father married a Nelson
woman and had my dad. They broke up. In 1994 my dad died .
His name was David Michael Laughton. Born in 1950. If you have
any information on any of these men please comtact me. It would be
greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Laughton by marriage - my ex-husband's family live in South Lincolnshire.
I live in the village of Laughton in North Lincolnshire UK, between Scunthorpe
and Gainsborough. I have been the headteacher of the village school for
just over three years. This village is very old, with mentions in the Domesday
book and evidence of life from Neolithic times. I am part of a group which
is interested in looking for links with any families that have lived in
the village. So far we have contacts in Canada and Australia as well as
in the UK. Hope to hear more about Laughtons worldwide.
I was looking up Alan Laughton who lives in Victoria, Australia and
ended up in your page instead. I love your information on your family
I was surprised and amazed to find this site! It's great to see
so many Laughton's represented on the net. My family originate
from Ireland and are spread out in London and the south east of England.
Why not e-mail me if your descendants originated in Ireland too, we might
be related!!!
Hello to all you Laughtons from a London based Laughton. I have a family

Absolutely fantastic! A big round of applause to the person who set
up this site! I'm stunned. I didn't think there were many Laughton's at
all ... suddenly ... Laughtons all over the world! Brilliant! I am 25 and
I live in Blackpool, England! I would like to know more about my family
history and I am happy to speak to anyone who wishes to speak to me, only
I don't really know much but hey! Who Does? Laughton Internet site - What

that would be something! Just to go off on a slight tangent, have any of
you ever been called "Mr. Laughington"?

Hi, I'm from Sheffield in England My family have been in Sheffield for
approx 130yrs I have traced a relative to Misterton in Lincolnshire in
1841 He is called Jonathan Laughton. I believe he was married in South
Muskam near Newark in November 1820. Any help would be greatfully recievedI
have 2 sons who will be carrying on the family name !!
I am Chris Laughton one of the last, I thought, in a long line of Laughtons
in England with a family tree which has been researched going back to 1481
and the Balif of Worcester. This is my first time on the internet and I
was surprised to see so many of you out there. If somebody reads this and
would like to find out more about my family tree then I would be very keen
to pass the information on. Off hand I can't remember much about the tree
but there was definitely a guy who 'died in America' and thats all that
was known. I have always suspected that there were American decendants
and so on.
Just briefly - I am 34, a furniture and product designer living in London.
The oldest Laughton alive is my grandmother Alison who is 88 (i think)
who married Richard (Charles) Laughton, a Colonel who fought in WW2 in
Burma in the Royal Artillery.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Hello, My greatgrandfather was Dugal Laughton. I am interested to see
if Cameron and Florence Laughton are actually my Uncle Cam and Auntie Flossie.

Wow.....I didn't realise how many Laughton's were out there. I
was only wandering the internet when I thought I might type my surname
in when all of a sudden I got all this info. None of the names seemed
familiar, though. My name is Elissa Laughton, I am nearly 17 years old
and I live in Victoria, Australia. My fathers name is Stuart John
Laughton. From there is my grandfather who died at the age of 39.
His name was Lesley John Laughton, nickname Jack. My great-grandfather
who's name was Lesley Laughton as well, and my great, great, grandfather,
by the name of Nicholas Laughton. Nicholas and Lesley senior, both
out-lived my grandfather Jack. If any one knows of my relations, please
contact me.

Very interesting, such diverse ideas and it seems as if us Laughtons
are everywhere! I am the daughter of Norman Laughton of Sun City
Arizona. I live with my husband, Walter, on Macleay Island, Queensland,
Australia. In my father's family, there were nine children - Ben,
Robert, Norman, Keith, Richard, Raymond, Donald, Joyce and Dorothy. Each
of those children have from one to eight children, who (mostly) have all
had children and many of us have grandchildren. I wasn't aware that
there were so many Laughton's in England! Thought that they were
all in Orkney, Scotland, Canada and California! Great reading.
Hello! I am Norman Laughton's granddaughter. Norman is Herbert
and Gladys Laughton's son. My mother is Nancy Laughton Sloan, Norman's
daughter. I am 37, married to Colin and live in Martinez, CA. with
son, Max and baby on the way, Sean.
My family is from a line of Laughton's in South Australia. Our ancestors
came to South Australia in the 1830s from England and were involved in
pastoral activities and stock and station agencies. Edward Laughton was
auctioneer at the first cattle sale by auction in Adelaide in 1861 and
on 14/7/1913 he sold the first ox at the openining of the new Abbotoir's
yards.
My father, Herbert,(no middle name) had one brother, named William S.Laughton.
Their father was Jerome Laughton, born in Orkney in 1834 and their mother
was Jean (Smith) Laughton, also from Orkney. (The Islands just North of
, and part of Scotland.) My father was born in 1887, in Walkerton, Ontario,
Canada. Was a naturalized U.S. Citizen. I do not remember having a model
airplane, we couldn't afford such. Our money went for food , rent and clothes.
Paul Laughton has another cousin named Norm. I guess. I will e-mail him,
to see if I can tie him into the clan. Fun to try, right? Thanks, Shirl.
Love to all, Grandpa Norm.
I am Norm Laughton, son of Herb and Gladys Laughton of the San Gabriel
Valley, Los Angeles County, where I lived the first 75 years of my life.
My father had one brother, William Spence Laughton, of Detroit. With the
Laughton name, you must be connected. All Laughtons I have contacted were
descendants of John Laughton and Jane Spence of Orkney, Scotland. Have
you traced back? My father was born in Canada, as were many Orkney
Laughtons. Your cousin (doubtless), Norm.
My papers show neither of your grand or great grands, but they
show only

I was so glad to stumble acroos this page. I have searched only
a few times for my own name, and with little success. I am 17 yrs
old and live in Devon, England. My dad (David) is a family tree fanatic
so hopefully this page may be of some use. Anyone wishing to contact
me may do so. I noticed that the family home is in California. Do
you have any relation to John Laughton, also of California. If so
you must be related to me. He is my uncle.
Well ! We were all really interested to see your Home page...but, we
are not convinced by your explanation of the meaning of our name.
When I looked it up in a book on heraldry in our local library, it said
that Laughton came from an old Saxon word Leactun meaning leek enclosure!
We think that comes much nearer the truth - especially as our branch of
the family are completely devoid of Lords, Ladies or Wise Virgins!! By
the way, we can't wait to visit the fairy-tale land of Laughton-Le-Morthen
P.S. We live in very ordinary Norfolk,England - oh and our visiting Laughton's
come from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. See you !

I found your address at rootsweb.com. I am trying to trace my great-great
grandmother Eliza J. Laughton of Bristol, ME (born 6 Dec 1821) who married
Hawes Atwood, a mariner from Wellfleet, MA (Cape Cod) on 7 Dec 1848.
The parents of Eliza J. were Thomas Laughton and Lydia Yates, married on
26 Nov 1818 in Bristol. H. Atwood was Eliza's second husband. She was probably
the young window of another Cape Cod man with the last name of Hawes. Any
help you can offer is much appreciated. I am willing to pay for your time
and trouble .
Thanks .

I was wondering if you knew a man named David Micheal Laughton from
Minnesota. He has 2 sons and 2 daughters including my self.
He died June 4,1994. I f you have any imformation about this man
please get back to me as soon as possible. Thanks!
Hi there! I would like to ask some information to Mister Ian Laughton.
Just surfing on the web and felt like going back some years ago. Maybe
we know each other, maybe not. Please let me know more about yourself.
I am in the process of trying to trace my ancestors. A Raymond Laughton
(then 25 years old) of Angels Camp, California, married my great-grandmother
Rebecca Estella Tripp in Angels Camp in October of 1899. My grandmother
was born in February of 1901, in Angels Camp. That is all I know and I
have been unable to trace anything at all about Mr. Laughton. Thanks in
advance for any clues anyone might have.
Hi, everyone. I know very little about my great-grandfather Raymond
Laughton. In fact, all I know is that he was 25 and a resident of Angels,
Camp, CA when he married my great-grandmother Rebecca Estella Tripp (resident
of Stockton, CA - age 19) on Octo ber 10, 1899. I believe he and my great-grandmother
divorced not long after the marriage and I have no idea what happened to
him - nor do I know from where he came. Any information or clues would
be greatly appreciated!! Stephanie in Denver, CO
I have been doing my genealogy search on and off for a few years and
have traced back to Orkney Islands in the late 1770s. My family was
Peter Laughton who married Isabella Brown they lived in Stromness.
Peter was a seaman and then a captain of a ship. His third son John
left Stromness in 1834 on the Stirling Castle and desserted in Sydney in
October 1835 thank goodness he did the ship ran aground off the Queensland
coast. The captain of the ship was Captain Fraser the husband of
Eliza Fraser who was travelling with him and was captured bythe local aboriginal
tribes and lived with them until she was rescued. I visited Orkney
in September 1997 and had a wonderful time just seeing where I came from.
I engaged a genealogist Alison McCallum in Stromness to do some further
searching for me after I left but we have drawn a blank at the moment.
I would be interested to hear from anyone with an interest in the laughton
name or with connections to my family. I live in Sydney Australia
but my father came from the town of Laughtondale near Windsor in New South
Wales.
I'm looking for information about my father, Jimmy Maurice Laughton,
possibly Lawton--he had a vivid imagination. He claimed to have been
born to Jack and Margaret Laughton in 1936--though 1934 is another possibility--and
to have had one sister, Linda, and one brother Jackie. His family
spent time in both Maimi, FL and South Carolina, possibly Abbeville.
Any info would be appreciated.
Delighted to find this page, surprised, but delighted. My father was
Lawrence Lens Laughton and my grandfather was John Laughton of Brenbury
Saskatchewan. All I know of my about my great granparents was that he was
a tailor in Glasgow Scotland. I will check out the rest of the website
and would love to hear from anyone who can tell me how to research further
up the family tree.

Hi Paul, Inspired by the info on your Laughton Information Exchange
Pages, we recently took a trip to Laughton-en-le-Morthen (the birhplace
of all Laughtons possibly) and were met with tremendous hospitality by
the locals. Whilst there we took quite a few pictures and would be
happy to share these with anyone interested. I can scan and send as JPEG

Greetings! I'm Mike Laughton's brother, but it looks like he forgot
to include me in the list of Laughtons on his information page. I
live in Washington, DC, and am one of the authors (there are hundreds)
of the internet game Genesis (www.neosoft.com/genesis). It's a fantasy
roleplaying game that should appeal to any Dungeons & Dragons fans,
and it's free. If you decide to give it a try and can manage to make
it all the way to the local post office without getting slain by a troll
or eaten by a giant toad, send me a letter. (I'm known there as Uhclem).
Have fun!

The last name is not too common, the first name is even more uncommon.
Am interested in any Scottish routes I may have and any French Huegenott
(sp?) that I may have. Everything gets kind of murky. It would be
fun to put together a Laughton familytree that more or less traces our
family back along whatever twists and turns a family, group, or tribe can
make. Who were we before we became Laughtons? What were our

I am very interested in the Laughton genealogy. My parents don't
know much about this subject so I'm looking for anyone who can help me.
All that I know is that my great grandmother left for New York when she
was in her early 20's. When she returned home, she had a child but
she wasnot married. She said that she had met a Laughton and they
were together for about a year. They seperated and he went over seas.
There is no proof that the person she met was a Laughtonbecause they cut
off all communication once he left so he never met her family. If
anyone can help me I would be very thankful.
Hello everyone, :) I see that my last message I tried to post got lost.
Basically, what I said was that my husband's paternal side of the tree
were all LAUGHTON's. The earliest LAUGHTON I have is Charles LAUGHTON,
born aprox. 1819 in Stonesfield, Oxfordshire, England. This particular
branch then mirgrated to Derbyshire and finally ended up in North Yorkshire.
I have created a website on this particular line. If you'd like to check
it out, http://members.aol.com/gypsymum. This site is dedicated to one
of the most famous LAUGHTONS... Charles Laughton, the late, great actor.
If you go to the page entitled "The 4th Brother" you'll find my deceased
father-in-law's biographical information and how it ties into this particular
line.
There was a message posted by Jean LAUGHTON [last known e-mail: was
jel4778@.garnet.acns.fsu.edu]. Her aunt was Vera LAUGHTON and was the only
daughter of Frank LAUGHTON, [not my Frank, though, Charle's younger brother.]
who who was born somewhere in England. Somehow they're related to Charles.

that from the nearby village of Laughton en le Morthen. The family tree
which we have starts in 1372.

More information from Harold....
The information we both have clearly comes from the same sourse. The
basic pedigree I have is headed "Pedigree of Laughton, of Laughton, Eastfield,
Howarth Grange, and Letwell."
As I recall, this pedigree was published in a volume called "The Pedigrees
of South Yorkshire Families". If you have access to this, or a copy of
this pedigree, you will note that the last line sets out the children of
Edmund Laughton. To my knowledge, only Alfred Nelson Laughton, the fourth
son, had children. He himself had only one son, my grandfather. Despite
my father being one of his six sons, at the next generation there is only
my elder brother, John, myself and a cousin, John. Both these Johns are
in England. If you and I are related, we have, I think , to go back at
least to Edmund's great great Uncles. Our own line is traced back to the
Robert de Laughton to which you referred.

Paul, I asked my father about how our clan came to California and here
is the answer...
From: EdLaughton@.aol.com: Pappy Laughton (or Herbert), Grandma Dickie's
husband, came to the U.S. in the early 1900's from Walerton, Ontario, Canada.
He was born there 11/17/1887. His parents (Jerome Laughton and Jean Smith)
were born on the Orkney Islands, Scotland. They immigrated to Canada before
Pappy was born. And that is the brief family history of how our clan came
to California. (Pappy, when he came to the U.S. went to California, met
Grandma Dickie, courted her, they married). Love, Dad

Glad to see this web site! I'll have to talk to our family historian,
Norm Laughton, and get more details, but from what I remember our ancestry
goes back to the Orkney Islands. I believe there was some discussion that
the Orkney Islands were par t of Norway originally and that our name was
Lofthane (not sure on the spelling there) and Anglicised to Laughton. Anyone
who knows of Grandma Dickie (Gladys) and Pappy, their 7 sons and two daughters,
I am a decendant of that group. The seven sons included: Ben, Bob, Norman,
Keith, Donald, Richard, and Ray. The two daughters are: Joyce Burger and

Just e-mail me if you can about it and I'll tell you more.

I am trying to trace my colleague from University, PHILIP LAUGHTON. He graduated from Cambridge University in 1972 with an Honours degree in Chemistry and did postgraduate work for 3 years in the University of Sheffield Department of Chemistry until 1975. He married shortly thereafter to Lorna and for some years worked as an Executive at Unilever U.K. for their food company Batchelors Peas in Sheffield (South Yorkshire). He lived in a district of Sheffield called Hunters' Bar. I haven't seen him since 1979 and would greatly like to trace him now to chat about old times.

Back again with some news for the Laughton's from the Orkney Islands - I did not know that I came from there but semi-retirement gives you time to learn all kinds of things. My Uncle Paul (Paul MacDonell Laughton, Ottawa CANADA) started the genealogy map some 20 years ago and I did not pay much attention, but now I have started to take his information to the web. If you are related to the Laughton's from Holm & Paplay in the Orkney's then you may want to look at our genealogy and other information on our new web site:
http://www.censol.ca/research/familytree/
I have found some specific e-mails from long lost relatives as far away as Australia, so I will contact you directly.
Also, if you follow this chain to George Van Wyck Laughton, M.C. and all that follow, then you may wish to visit the separate site on his exploits in the Battle of Arass (Vimy Ridge) found at:
http://www.censol.ca/research/greatwar/
Please reply to my e-mail address at rlaughton@.censol.ca or rlaughton@.sympatico.ca as I am on my wife's computer at this moment.

The pieces are beginning to fall into place. My father, Charles Malcolm Laughton, and his two Sisters, Mary and Elizabeth, died before I became interested in putting together a family history so I had to start from scratch.
Grandfather, Malcolm Laughton b September 18, 1866 Ontario. He was a Customs Agent for Canada and also a Census taker. He took his family to California after his retirement from in the hopes that the climate would be easier on my grandmother, Arabella Loring Laughton. She died in California and he returned to Sault Ste Marie, Canada. My father stayed behind in California.
GGrandfather, Malcolm Laughton b June 17, 1821 South Ronaldsay, Orkney. Married to Anne Liddle. Immigrated to Canada (date unknown). His siblings included
ann, Elizabeth, James, Mary, Samual and William
GGgrandfather Malcolm b July 6, 1790 Orkney Scotland
gggrandfather William Laughton. I do not have any information on him

Hi all! I am related to Mike Laughton, he's posted on this
board. I found Mike on the internet. For many years, my family has heard of him, but knew nothing. Then, one day I saw a Laughton family tree site he posted on ( not this one) and we've been contact ever since. So, those who are looking for lost relatives, I hope you find them as I found Mike. Walter P. Laughton, SR. was my grandfather.
Grandfather was born 1900, not sure where, but died at age 83 in West River, MD. He was in WWI, was told he lied about his age to get in. Worked as a postal worker. One of his favorite things was cake icing on bread. Sorry, I don't know much about his family, he didn't like to talk much about his family....probably issues that weren't resolved. When I was younger, I thought I was adopted. My mom took one look at my feet and said 'yep, you're one of us!' Big gap between the big toe and the other toes, she said that was a Laughton trait. Not sure if she was pulling my chain there. Be glad to here any of you!!!!

I've changed my email address. Still looking for information about my Scottish, but probably not Ornkey ancestors. My grandfather's name was Dugal Laughton, and he came to Massachusetts from Scotland, born in the late 19th or early 20th century somewhere near Glasgow. Dugal is such an odd name I thought that anyone who'd come across it might remember. I'll look at my dad's birth certificate forfor information. Feel free to contact me.

I am searching for information concerning a Mr Laughton who was connected
with (either as owner or partner)Masson Mill between Cromford and Matlock
Bath in Derbyshire, England during the early part of this century. Apparently
he left with his family for Manchester sometime after 1920 after a downturn
in the cotton market. I am researching for a book concerning Matlock Bath
between the wars and later. Apparently, Mr Laughton, who lived opposite
the mill, was both a business man and a philanthropist. Any information
(about his philanthropic activities mainly)would be appreciated. Many thanks.

Today I was looking for a good place to get a Union Jack. I typed in
a search for just that phrase and came up with a British American news
site.
There, somewhere, I found a link for coats of arms. While looking for
MacLaren, I found Laughton, my maiden name. How delightful to be
greeted with a green dragon! I've always been a big dragon fan.
Having been raised to believe my family name was Scottish, imagine my surprise
to find the name may be English. The little bit of success I've had looking
for the coat of arms in Scottish geneology books indicated the name means
"A field for growing leeks." My father's name is Herbert Henry
Laughton, born in Massachusetts, USA in 1924, his father's name is Dugal
Laughton, and he was born in either Glasgow or Edinburg, Scotland, although
I do not know the year. If I get more info from paperwork,
I'll make it available. Thanks for the British history lesson.
Anybody know where I can buy a
proper Union Jack?

many Laughtons around the world. My sister Heather and I have been tracing
our family for a number of years and have found we have direct relatives
in Vancouver, Canada. What fascinates me is the amazing number of Anne

mothers maiden name as the middle christian name for the eldest child ie.
John Gale Laughton whose mother was Anne Gale.

land of the 2000 Olympics. I liked to think that I came from
an enclosure,
settlement or town (Olde English - tun) where everyone laughed a lot
and
was full of the joys of life (laugh-tun).
& Wilson's 1991 edition of "A dictionary of English surnames" and
Hanks
& Hodges 1995 "A dictionary of surnames". The former gave
names only,
the latter a meaning, for both LAUGHTON and LAWTON, though I was
most interested in the former and thought the two possibly unrelated.
Then
I came across Paul Laughton's website - WOW, fantastic! In which
Paul
states that "In Olde English, laughton means "town by the lake", but
without an explanation of why that is so! Browsed the website
and up
comes Alan Laughton's contribution from Corel Family Tree ver1, in
which an example is given of a Laughton family who lived in the village
of
Lawton in Cheshire/Herefordshire, which as the "Dictionary of surnames"
confirms is derived from Olde English hlaw tun, meaning a settlement
(tun) on a hill (hlaw). So there does seem to be a connection
between the
two spellings, though the earliest quoted date is for a Philip
de Lauton of
1281. Then Newbold's wonderful review of the village of
Laughton en le
Morthen, (www.j31.co.uk/laughton.htm) takes us back to 870 A.D.
and
again makes a possible connection between the Laughton's name
and the
Saxon for Lawton, with a fort on the top of a prominent hill
next to
Laughton Church, but no mention of a lake. Naomi Laughton
gives us a
delightful historical walking tour map of the village in Paul
Laughton's
website, which I shall certainly go on a pilgrimage to on my
next visit to
the motherland.
enquiries gave under the Laughton entry (Reaney & Wilson,
1991), the
names William de Lactone 1185 (Templars); Walter de Laughton
1327;
Thomas Laughton 1541; and others, the first two showing the change
from
Olde English of the Anglo-Saxons to Middle English influenced
by
Norman French. Hanks & Hodges (1995) state that Laughton
is a
habitation name derived from Olde English leac (leek) and tun
(enclosure). The compound word was used in the extended
sense of a herb
garden and later a kitchen garden. "Laughton near Folkingham
in
Lincolnshire, however, was probably named as loc-tun enclosed
farm".
Olde English loc meaning a lock or fastening. Are these
speculations or
with Paul's 'town by the lake' do they have real justification?
And what
about all those other variant spellings given to us by Alan from
the Corel
Family - Loton, Lorton, Lotton, Loughmane, Loughton, Lawtons,
Laughton, Lowton, Lawton, Loughmant, Loughmend, Loughman,
Loughmand, Loughment, Loughmyn, Loughmen, Loughmint, Loughmynd
and Loughmind?

Fantastic. What a great contribution to understanding the family,
and the interest there is in our roots. I'm down under in Aussie,
soaking up the Olympic Games right now, which brings the world family together
in peace and harmony. But I was born in England. My brother
still resides there and is researching
our stream of the family. My own interest wandered into the origin(s)
of the name and I came up with a different version again in the 'Dictionary
of English
surnames' combined with the 'Dictionary of surnames'. The former under
the heading 'Laughton' gave names only starting with William de Lactone
(Templars, 1185) followed by Walter de Laughton (1347); and others of more
recent vintage. That could very well agree with your interpretation
of the name as Town by the lake, but in the second dictionary it
gave an explanation from the Olde English from 'tun' meaning enclosure,
settlement and now town plus 'leac' meaning the vegetable 'leek', hence
a vegetable garden. Must say I prefer the lake idea. I can
accept Lawton as from Olde English hlaw = hill and tun = town, very sensible
place to locate a settlement, and I certainly prefer a lake to a vegetable!
Love to get your comments on the latter, as I am giving another talk on
the subject at the next Toastmasters International Speech Competition -
quite light hearted, but also inspirational! Keep up the great work. Chris

Attention all with Orkney Islands ancestors!!!! Have you clicked on
to "www.cursiter.com" ? If not, try it - you click onto the
Laughton name and you will have hundreds of Laughton names, dates and locations.
Rather than use valuable Internet time, I copied to disc and browsed at
my leisure. If you have success in what you are seeking, I would
be pleased to hear about it. Good luck!

Dear Paul, Have just been browsing the laughton.com pages and am amazed
to see the growing number of laughtons 'popping up! My message is also
posted there,
thankyou. However, as it is all so interesting, it would be just
great if each person could type in (preferably bold letters), where he/she
is living - some have done this, but others it is not possible to tell
just from the e-mail address. It just makes it more interesting to
know the town and country the notice is from. I think it is a good
idea to keep checking this site, as if there isn't a family link today,
there could be, tomorrow. Someone asked if the name had ever been mispronounced
-
frequently and often is my answer! "Laffton" or "Larffton"
is the most frequent I've had, and I have also found my Orkney ancestor's
marriage record in Wales was spelt "Loughton". I think a lot depended upon
how well educated the clerks were who filled in the forms. Anyway, the
site fulfills a great need for all of us who thought we had an unusual
name! ..Wonder what I'll get if I type "Smith" in my search engine?
(probably a headache!)

Greetings to all Laughtons I am Barry Laughton, living in Norfolk UK.
The farthest that I know of my family tree is my gggrandfather John Laughton
m. Eliza Wade daughter of General Wade (General being a name rather than
a title). My ggrandfather was named John General b. in Poplar London UK
1856. He married Sarah
Madden. They had a number of children one named John General m. Emily
Maud Buck, believed to have emigrated to Australia Also believe that a
member
of the family went to New Zealand, that's about enough for now.

business, and I purposely omitted a lot of information that is inappropriate
to this personal page; however, you may want to know what some of the abreviations
mean:
ICEG: International Council for Economic Growth
ASEGRA: a non-Laughton family; anything marked "for ASEGRA only"
will have no meaning to people outside the ASEGRA circle.

villages with the same name. I was wondering whether, in your search
for your ancestors, any information about Laughton- towns or villages came
to
light? The village is celebrating its history by producing a book of
all the people who now live in the village as well as by enacting the funeral
of one of the first ministers of England ( what is now a Prime minister).
Two of the first ministers from the 1700's are buried in the graveyard
of
the village church. One of these - a Pelham- was instrumental in bringing
the Gregorian Calendar into everyday usage in Britain. If you have any

the descendants of Gilbert Laughtan and Margaret (Miller)
Laughtan, and
then only the descendants of their son John Laughton and Jean or Jane
Spence Laughton. (Gilbert and Margaret Laughtan also had a son James
and a
daughter Margaret.) John was born 30 April 1801. He was my great
grandfather, he and wife Margaret lived at Vigga, a 56 acre farm in
Holm
(pronounced Ham) Parish, Main Island, Orkney, where they had nine
children, one of whom was my fathers father, Jerome, who married Jean
Smith, in Orkney, then shortly after, departed for Canada, where they
settled in Walkerton, Ontario. My father, Herbert was born there. He
left
home at 17, worked in Toronto, and Detroit for a couple of years as
a Reed
and Rattan furniture maker, then went to Los Angeles, continuing in
the
same trade, where he met and married my mother, Gladys (Nichols) ,
called
Dickie. They had nine children, I am the third, Bruce Norman Laughton,
and
the ninth child, Dorothy, and her husband Dennis Cunningham, also live
in
Cupertino. Twenty years ago, I went to Orkney, via Scotland, to locate
the
place my grandfather was born and lived until in his forties. My father
only knew that his father had come from Orkney, the Islands just north
of
Scotland. In the Scots Record Office in Edinburgh, I learned where
in
Orkney only because I knew Jerome had married Jean Smith. Seems there
are
so many Laughtons in Orkney it would have been a 3 month job to locate
Jerome, however, the man looked up Smith (He did not know there were
Smiths
in Orkney) and found their wedding record, placing them. My wife
and I
went by train and Bus to the north end of Scotland, then Ferry to
Mainland, where we met several descendants of my grandfathers brothers
and
sisters. They treated us wonderfully. We still correspond.Since then,
I
have been corresponding with two Canadian Laughtons who have done much
geneologic search, both been to Orkney, and are descended from brothers
of
my grandfather Jerome. One is Paul Laughton of Ottawa, the other Ivan
Laughton of Nelson, B.C. Both have sent me charts of our common
descendants. If you wish, and you think it possible your ancestors
came
from Orkney, I could write my Canadian cousins and inquire? Cheers,
(The
exact ending my cousin Paul of Ottawa uses) Norm Laughton Sun City,
