Hi omg I cannot believe there are so many laughtons out there and it seems they mostly have the names james herbert frank alan clarence. My mother was a laughton, her father was Michael Laughton who was a part aboriginal man from Utopia/alcoota Northern Territory. He had 2 half brothers Herbert and Frederick. Their father was Jim Laughton who was a white man who was apart of huckitta station NT. Michael's sons names where Frederick and James Emanuel (but called Clarence). I have no idea how he got that name. Michael grew up 2 sons Allan & Herbert whose fathers were white men from around the Alice Springs area. Michael married Amy Collie or Gully (that was the name given taken from Aboriginal pronounciation at the time) there were 3 daughters Ethel Evans nee Laughton (who married a white man) Rona Stuart nee Laughton and Pauline Thomas nee Laughton(a white man). Allan had 3 sons Frank Robert, Michael & Lionel and several daughters as well. Herbert had Patrick, Gerald & Wayne he also had 3 daughters Gail, Coral & Michelle. Ethel had 11 children and Rona (my mother) had 5 children, Michael James Lynnette Robyn, Bronwyn & Lezlee. I see similar names in previous comments. Frederick had 2 children Stuart & Leonie. From what I remember being told Michael's father Jim Laughton was Scotish but was not told where he had come from. He may have fathered other children in other states as he worked with cattle. Although these descendants I have mentioned all came from Central Australia. I don't know James birthdate but Michael or Mick as he was known who was the eldest brother was born 12/6/1900 give or take a year or so. he died in 1986/7. I grew thinking that my family was the only Laughtons other than Charles Laughton the actor as I hadnt know any others. The name was spelt Lawton due to Michael being a cattle duffer apparently and had to leave the NOrthern Territory. He returned to Alice Springs in 1978 and stayed there until he died. Amy followed a few short years later. He is survived by only 2 of his 7 children (as he classed the 2 olders boys his own). His daughtedr Rona dying 6 years ago.
I would be really interested in hearing if anyone else has information regarding this.

Hi, I am Catherine Laughton. My Father is Campbell McPherson Laughton born Glasgow Scotland, migrated to Australia 1951. He had brothers Albert (dec'd) & James (Jimmy) (dec'd), sister Agnes (known as Nancy). My Grandfather was Albert Frederick Laughton (from England), married Agnes McPherson in Glasgow & remained there, until migrating to Australia in the late 1950s.

His son, your uncle many times over, was Abisha H. Laughton also born June 16, 1849 in Maine and died March 12, 1935. His wife was Olive A. Buzzell born Dec. 25, 1847 and died November 21, 1928. Her parents were Thaddeus F. Buzzell born June 18, 1822 and died June 29, 1888.Thaddeus' wife Sarah F. Stanton born March 1825 and died May 20, 1915. Abisha and Olive had a daughter Mimmie E. Been a couple years since I posted to this site, but am still digging for my Laughton roots. The farthest back I can go is Captain James Laughton, a merchant seaman who lived in NYC in the late 1790s. He and his wife Mary had one son (John E) and 3 daughters (Eliza Parkhurst of KY, Uzarella Nuttman of NJ, and Mary "X") John lived in Richmond, VA during the civil war. Francis Edward Laughton married Mary Evelyn Francis Clarke in 1896. In the 1901 Census, they had a daughter, Jessie, who died unmarried. He died in Worcestershire in 1937 and Mary in 1839.

I was born Jayne Laughton and my father's name was Bernard Clarence Laughton (b 21 12 1921). He had a sister Pearl Laughton. We never knew who their father was, there is nothing on the birth certificate but we were always told he was from Canada. We have no idea what happened to him and when he disappeared. Our grandmother was called Gertrude Laughton. My father was married to a Socttish lady called Rhoda and they had a son, Derek. He was adopted and changed his surname from Laughton in the early 50s. since my earlier entry on Orkney Laughtons, I found the date of marriage of John Laughton and Hellen Laughton nee Robertson as being 1849 from church bans. No other information seems to be available. This line is separate from that of all others apparently listed on the web and nothing seems to exist otherwise. There are quite a number of John Laughtons all around at the same time but this are definately parents to John Robertson Laughton deceased 1924. I suspect that the line goes to South Ronaldsay, does anyone have info on this stuff?

Does anyone have further information on the origin of the name in Orkney being "Lachtane"? and originating with a "Tackman" in the original Nordic Tribal system. It is interesting that the biggest concentrations of Laughtons are both Orkney and Yorkshire, both of which were heavily populated by Danes or Norwegians, my theory is that they have common roots but I have also seen a reference to an earlier Laughton jumping ship at Orkney to found the name there? I have also heard that there is some connection to the Sinclair Clan apparently? Can anyone shed any light?

Hello all Laughtons especially the Orkadian ones.
I'm looking for any info which can help trace a line back through John Laughton and Helen or Ellen Laughton ms Robertson in Orkney.
I am son of Edwin Sinclair Laughton, son of Edward dob 5/4/1907 who was Brother of John dob 25/11/1891. Both were sons of John Robertson Laughton 1852 and Mary Jane ms Flett 1870. Last in the line I can get are John and Helen as mentioned. Our line goes back through Brims Hoy to Orphir and Firth on Mainland Orkney but I'm not sure where the earlier sources are. The earlier profession in the registers are farming but in the later generations at least, inshore fishing was important.
I'd be grateful if there was anything which could help and as they still say in Orkney - "Ah'll be back in a blink"

My grandmother was Etheleen Laughton born in 1882 in Sheffield, daughter of John Henry Laughton and Annie Eliza Gibbins. She immigrated to Canada in 1906 and married her childhood sweetheart Gordon Watson and bore 9 children. She passed Nov 9/77 at the age of 96. It was reported that she was related to Charles Laughton as my mother visited him and called him her great uncle but I do not know the connection.

Hi, my name is Steven Laughton born 1977 in Bradford. Son on Keith Laughton born 1956 in Hull.

Keith was one of 3 Children, brother Brian Laughton and Sister Denise Laughton.

My grandparents were Alfred Jospeph Laughton and Enid Laughton (nee Wade). Born in 1915 and 1920 respectively. Alfred came from Hull and was brought up on Hessle Road and used to work on the railways. They later moved and settled in Bradford.

Alfred had a Sister called Marion Laughton and another brother I think, but we do not know his name.

My grandad used to swear that Charles Laughton the Actor was his great Uncle, not sure how true this was. My gran said we were related to the Laughton's in Scarborough that ran a Hotel but again, i'm not sure if this is true!!

That's as much as i know. Would love to hear from anyone that might now us.

My names Michael Laughton. Born in Sheffield England in 1951. I have a brother, David born in 1954.
My father was Richard Henry (Harry) Laughton who had a sister called Joyce. My Grandfather was James Henry Laughton. My Grandmother was Olive Dunham. She was sepaated from my grandfather and ran The Ram Jam Inn, Stretton, Rutland and the Three Tunns in Castle Bytham. I believe the eldest one [Christopher?] would have been born around 1945 somewhere in Manchester or Stockport, England. I believe you are unaware of my existence, but I am Kenneth's daughter by his first marriage to Maimie Finnie who died in 1945. I have a few photos and a letter from him dated 1996 as well as my birth certificate of course. Having been brought up as an only child, I would love to be in touch with other members of my family who are of my generation.

Thomas Laughton was also my gg grandfather. The Thomas Laughton who moved to Qld was my g grandfather.

Thomas Laughton married Louisa Seabrook in Tasmania 1901 and had one child there Thomas Clarence, then they moved to Qld where my grandfather Ernest Stewart Laughton was born, plus a few more children.

Thomas, Louisa and Ernest were living at 54 Roundtree St Balmain in 1936. Ernest Laughton then married and had 3 children, one being Thomas Laughton my dad.

Dad lived in Mort St Balmain for a while. Also both of us worked at Cockatoo Island.

Hi, I am trying to solve the great Laughton mystery from our family. My Great-Grandmother Kathleen Victoria Laughton was born to James and Mary Laughton in 1897. James was in the forces and she was born in Ireland while he was posted there but they settled in Devonport. Here she married William J Denton in 1915 and they had several children, the only one who survived being my Grandmother. Kathleen seems to have disappeared from the records around 1930 - my grandmother lived with her father and new family in Worcestershire and never really mentioned her mother. Father to all but the youngest 2 was Clarence Alan (also) - I know nothing about him, as I only met him when I was 5, and my dad didn't get on with him. I know of my cousins on the Laughton side, but I wouldn't know how to find out anything about my grandad and anymore of his family. If you know or think you are related to me please get in touch. My Grandad was living in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, and may have gone to live in Liverpool until he died.

Hi all the Laughton's. I am Ryan Laughton from South Africa with wife Yolandi Rhona Laughton (a boer breed), Originally I am from Rhodesia (No, not Zimbabwe). I have 3 brother's namely Brett Robert Laughton, Pastor Lance Craig Laughton and Gary Shane Laughton who all currently reside in Johannesburg, South Africa. My name is Glenn Dana Laughton Priestley, born in Oxnard, California although my parents were both British & I was brought up in Blackpool, U.K.

My mum's maiden name is Betty Anne Priestley (81 yrs of age in 2007) & her father (my Grandfather) was Frederick Laughton who died in 1959(aged 69, and was brought up in Alderdale Hall, Droysden, Manchester. His Father (my GGrandfather was named George William & he & my Grandfather owned a Rubber business (believed to have been 'G.W. Laughton's'that produced the World's first Rubber Heal (which we still retain). The factory was in Vienna & they had Rubber Plantations in Malaysia. Unfortunately, the business colapsed shortly after the Second World War. THEY WERE VERY KEEN MANCHESTER UNITED SUPPORTERS. I was in possession of an item of jewellery that displayed a family crest until it was stolen in 2005 (Maroon, Cream & Pale Blue with a galleon) & I regret not finding the time to investigate further.

I have a cousin Michael Laughton living in Cheshire, U.K., an Aunt Phyllis Laughton (now Harding) living in Sidmouth, Devon, U.K. and several female cousins living between Manchester & Nottingham. When I have a little more time, I shall attempt to post some further information to the site.

Wow!! It's taken me 2 hours to read about all you Laughtons. There needs to be more input from Sydney, Australia!
I know my name is not Laughton BUT my husband's g.g.grandfather was John Laughton, the ship builder & carpenter who arrived in Australia in 1836 after jumping ship. He built boats on the lower Hawkesbury River, became a preacher, married a widower with 1 child and then had ten more!! So if all the rels keep the same history no wonder there are so many of you all over the world! So I need to go back over all your entries but I can remember maria from Sydney with rels in Windsor. They are our rels too! Today we visited Laughtondale near Wiseman's Ferry. John Laughton who was born in 1815 in the Orkneys Scotland, parents Peter Laughton and Isabella Brown are the branch I am interested in. I see some reference to the Laughtons of Renhold, Bedford, unfortunately it appears to be an old entry and there is no contact. I hope Dennis and Lorna, who referred to the Laughton/Renhold connection, see this (or anyone else who has a possible connection) and contact me. Jesse Laughton of Renhold married my gg aunt, Anne (Fanny) Buck. They had eight or nine children, nearly all of whom were born in Renhold before immigrating to Canada around 1882. Their children were Harland, Leah, Agnes, Fanny, Mary, Francis, Hilda and Alfred. There may also have been a Julia, but it is possible Julia is actually Hilda's middle name. Mary Laughton appears to have married one Thomas Sullivan and had two children, Jack and Hilda. Most of Jesse's and Anne's children were still living at home with their parents at the time of the 1901 Canadian census. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello to All. I have a somewhat strange request. I recently needed to get hold of my FULL birth certificate from the Sheffield Register Office (UK). I previously ever only had the short version. The Registrar informed me, after checking in the ledger, that on my date of birth, The 2nd August, 1951 there was also another entry of a birth. A Michael (same name) Laughton (same spelling) in the same borough ( S W Sheffield ). Now this of course maybe an incorrect entry, but it seems odd that someone with the same name and born on the same day in the same district registered at the same time. The Registrar was surprised at this entry and says that it is correct. The only difference is I have a middle name of Richard. Is there any Laughtons out there who can shed any light. It is a bit of a puzzle. Both my parents ( Richard Henry and Olive ) have passed away so there is no way of finding out from this end.And apart from my younger brother (David) I am not aware of any other close relativer bearing the Laughton surname. There is a gravestone in the Baraka Mission Cemetery in Libreville Gabon for a Robert, son of William Laughtan who was from Scotland. I think the date is 1864. The writing is very hard to read--don't know if it is his birth or death year. He was likely working for traders in this area of Africa.

I am researching the family of Ellen BOND of Irchester, who was the daughter of Quintus BOND and Betsy Ann BAYES. Ellen married John LAUGHTON and had children Alfred Burrows, Doris Ellen, Reginald Thomas, Phyllis Ethel and Jack.

Also, Beatrice LAUGHTON of Irchester, daughter of Samuel & Mary (and sister of Sarah, Margaret, George, Samuel Eaton and Herbert) married Harry BOND, and she had children Ivy May, Edith Elizabeth and Charles Henry BOND.

As Irchester is not such a big place, I expect the 2 families I mentioned above are connected. I would love to hear from anybody connected to the Laughton family of Irchester.

Does anyone know the whereabouts of Andy Laughton? He worked with me for a short time in the 1980s at BBC Radio London. This was a local radio station serving Britain's capital. Andy worked with me on a programme called 'Hold the Front Page' - a weekly review of London's newspapers. He was a bright graduate and electronics boffin. After a short time he went to work in Ecuador and now seems to have disappeared. At least I can't find him on the Internet. Andy must be in his late 40s.

I think I might be a ggggrandson through his first marriage, if there was one, to a woman who settled in Canada after they split up. If there was a non-marital relationship you have record of, I really do still want to know. (Someone sat on evidence that my gggrandfather, Sewell's possible son, was more or less the town drunk, for 6 months before she told me, b/c she thought I might be offended. I wasn't.)

She was the daughter of Sampson Laughton/Lawton who was born about 1826 in Sedgley, Staffordshire, England and Phebe Cooper. Sampson's father was named Andrew Lawton/Lotton. If anyone has any info, please let me know. If anyone has access to parish records or other info from Staffordshire (for example on CD) and could check for me, that would be great.

I can trace my family back to a sea captain named James Laughton who starts appearing in NYC harbor records in the late 1790's. He's taken prisoner by an American privateer during the revolutionary war and is held in Norfolk Virginia until he posts bond. He's dead by April 1804. There a NYC court order declaring James dead and his wife Mary is to provide an inventory of James' possessions within 30 days.

James had 3 daughters and one son. There's a Mary who I am still trying to figure out. Ursarella, who married a James Nuttmann, Eliza, who married a Parkhurst and moved to Kentucky, and John who moved to Richmond, Virginia, had two wives and several children, some of which fought for the Confederacy in the civil war. Please contact me if you have any Laughton questions.

He graduated from Cambridge University in 1972 with an Honours degree in Chemistry and did postgraduate work for 3 years in the University of Sheffield Department of Chemistry until 1975. My family has traced our ancestors back to Robert Laughton born 1513 in Leicester, Leicester, England. Wife name unknown but indicated that she was born 1519 in Leicester. The pieces are beginning to fall into place. My father, Charles Malcolm Laughton, and his two Sisters, Mary and Elizabeth, died before I became interested in putting together a family history so I had to start from scratch.

Grandfather, Malcolm Laughton b September 18, 1866 Ontario. He was a Customs Agent for Canada and also a Census taker. He took his family to California after his retirement from in the hopes that the climate would be easier on my grandmother, Arabella Loring Laughton. She died in California and he returned to Sault Ste Marie, Canada. My father stayed behind in California.

GGrandfather, Malcolm Laughton b June 17, 1821 South Ronaldsay, Orkney. Married to Anne Liddle. Immigrated to Canada (date unknown). His siblings included

Hi all! I am related to Mike Laughton, he's posted on this
board. I found Mike on the internet. For many years, my family has heard of him, but knew nothing. Then, one day I saw a Laughton family tree site he posted on ( not this one) and we've been contact ever since. So, those who are looking for lost relatives, I hope you find them as I found Mike. Walter P. Laughton, SR. was my grandfather.
Grandfather was born 1900, not sure where, but died at age 83 in West River, MD. He was in WWI, was told he lied about his age to get in. Worked as a postal worker. One of his favorite things was cake icing on bread. Sorry, I don't know much about his family, he didn't like to talk much about his family....probably issues that weren't resolved. When I was younger, I thought I was adopted. My mom took one look at my feet and said 'yep, you're one of us!' Big gap between the big toe and the other toes, she said that was a Laughton trait. Not sure if she was pulling my chain there. Be glad to here any of you!!!!

My great grandmother was Ida Laughton, born Derbyshire around 1898. Sister of Muriel, said to be cousin of Charles Laughton the actor. I don�t know many things about the family Lauton, but my family�s mother has this name. My grandmother told us a story about a little boy maybe named Charles Laughton that came to Brazil by boat. With so many Laughton researchers about can someone help with information on BARBARA LAUGHTON born c.1852 in Scotland.By 1877 she had moved to Linskill Street in North Shields, Northumberland. She married William Scott at the Presbyterian Church in Tynemouth on 6th January 1877. She was a widow by 1891 when she was a Grocer/Confectioner working on her own account in North King Street, Tynemouth. Her father was SAMUEL LAUGHTON, a Tailor. He was probably born in Scotland between 1820 and 1834. Barbara and William had a son WILLIAM LAUGHTON SCOTT, b.15th June 1879 in Tynemouth.

My grandfather was Harry R Laughton, of Mt Ranier, MD. He was the oldest of 5 boys (Harry, Arthur, Walter, Leroy, and Forrest) and 2 girls (Flora and Fannie)

My great grandfather was Edward Forrest Laughton. He lived in Mt Ranier, MD. Edward was married to Ida Estelle Marsh. Edward a brother Walter Judson Laughton, who lived in NJ. Walter married a Maggie Bornheimer and had 3 kids: John B. Laughton, Catherine Laughton, and Addie Laughton.

My gg grandfather was Lyman Judson Laughton, of Ricnmond, VA, and after the civil war, in NJ. He was a Confederate soldier in the 12th Virginia Infantry along with his brother John Edward Laughton, JR. There were other brothers and sisters in this family, to include Eliza Hercelia Laughton, James Crane Laughton, and Charles P. Laughton.

My ggg grandfather was John Edward Laughton, SR, born in NJ but moved to Richmond, VA after marrying Catherine Roberts. Catherine dies after giving birth to my gg grandad. After a while, John remarried, to a Sarah Ann Cook. All are buried in Shockoe Hill cemetary in Richmond. Only Sarah has a headstone.

My gggg grandad was James Laughton, a merchant sea captain who starts appearing in NYC harbor records about 1791. He was married to Mary Delzell. They had 4 children; Uzzarella (Nuttman), Eliza (Parkhurst), John Laughton, and Marie.

That is my family tree in a nutshell.

There, somewhere, I found a link for coats of arms. While looking for MacLaren, I found Laughton, my maiden name. How delightful to be greeted with a green dragon! I've always been a big dragon fan. Having been raised to believe my family name was Scottish, imagine my surprise to find the name may be English. The little bit of success I've had looking for the coat of arms in Scottish geneology books indicated the name means "A field for growing leeks." MORE INSIGHTS INTO THE ORIGINS OF THE LAUGHTON NAME

I am an English Laughton born and bred, but now living down under in the
land of the 2000 Olympics. I liked to think that I came from an enclosure,
settlement or town (Olde English - tun) where everyone laughed a lot and
was full of the joys of life (laugh-tun).

My first forays into seeking enlightenment came from a perusal of Reaney
& Wilson's 1991 edition of "A dictionary of English surnames" and Hanks
& Hodges 1995 "A dictionary of surnames". The former gave names only,
the latter a meaning, for both LAUGHTON and LAWTON, though I was
most interested in the former and thought the two possibly unrelated. Then
I came across Paul Laughton's website - WOW, fantastic! In which Paul
states that "In Olde English, laughton means "town by the lake", but
without an explanation of why that is so! Browsed the website and up
comes Alan Laughton's contribution from Corel Family Tree ver1, in
which an example is given of a Laughton family who lived in the village of
Lawton in Cheshire/Herefordshire, which as the "Dictionary of surnames"
confirms is derived from Olde English hlaw tun, meaning a settlement
(tun) on a hill (hlaw). So there does seem to be a connection between the
two spellings, though the earliest quoted date is for a Philip de Lauton of
1281. Then Newbold's wonderful review of the village of Laughton en le
Morthen, (www.j31.co.uk/laughton.htm) takes us back to 870 A.D. and
again makes a possible connection between the Laughton's name and the
Saxon for Lawton, with a fort on the top of a prominent hill next to
Laughton Church, but no mention of a lake. Naomi Laughton gives us a
delightful historical walking tour map of the village in Paul Laughton's
website, which I shall certainly go on a pilgrimage to on my next visit to
the motherland.

So what was 'laugh-ton' derived from in Saxon times? My dictionary
enquiries gave under the Laughton entry (Reaney & Wilson, 1991), the
names William de Lactone 1185 (Templars); Walter de Laughton 1327;
Thomas Laughton 1541; and others, the first two showing the change from
Olde English of the Anglo-Saxons to Middle English influenced by
Norman French. Hanks & Hodges (1995) state that Laughton is a
habitation name derived from Olde English leac (leek) and tun
(enclosure). The compound word was used in the extended sense of a herb
garden and later a kitchen garden. "Laughton near Folkingham in
Lincolnshire, however, was probably named as loc-tun enclosed farm".
Olde English loc meaning a lock or fastening. Are these speculations or
with Paul's 'town by the lake' do they have real justification? And what
about all those other variant spellings given to us by Alan from the Corel
Family - Loton, Lorton, Lotton, Loughmane, Loughton, Lawtons,
Laughton, Lowton, Lawton, Loughmant, Loughmend, Loughman,
Loughmand, Loughment, Loughmyn, Loughmen, Loughmint, Loughmynd
and Loughmind?

Fantastic. What a great contribution to understanding the family, and the interest there is in our roots. I'm down under in Aussie, soaking up the Olympic Games right now, which brings the world family together in peace and harmony. But I was born in England. My brother still resides there and is researching
our stream of the family. My own interest wandered into the origin(s) of the name and I came up with a different version again in the 'Dictionary of English
surnames' combined with the 'Dictionary of surnames'. The former under the heading 'Laughton' gave names only starting with William de Lactone (Templars, 1185) followed by Walter de Laughton (1347); and others of more recent vintage. That could very well agree with your interpretation of the name as Town by the lake, but in the second dictionary it gave an explanation from the Olde English from 'tun' meaning enclosure, settlement and now town plus 'leac' meaning the vegetable 'leek', hence a vegetable garden. Must say I prefer the lake idea. I can accept Lawton as from Olde English hlaw = hill and tun = town, very sensible place to locate a settlement, and I certainly prefer a lake to a vegetable! Love to get your comments on the latter, as I am giving another talk on the subject at the next Toastmasters International Speech Competition - quite light hearted, but also inspirational! thankyou. However, as it is all so interesting, it would be just great if each person could type in (preferably bold letters), where he/she is living - some have done this, but others it is not possible to tell just from the e-mail address. It just makes it more interesting to know the town and country the notice is from. I think it is a good idea to keep checking this site, as if there isn't a family link today, there could be, tomorrow. Someone asked if the name had ever been mispronounced -
frequently and often is my answer! "Laffton" or "Larffton" is the most frequent I've had, and I have also found my Orkney ancestor's marriage record in Wales was spelt "Loughton". I think a lot depended upon how well educated the clerks were who filled in the forms. Anyway, the site fulfills a great need for all of us who thought we had an unusual name! ..Wonder what I'll get if I type "Smith" in my search engine? (probably a headache!)

Good site - do you have any information on the Laughtons of Scotland, i.e. the Orkney Islands? This is where my great-great-grandfather John was born in 1793. He was a master mariner and came to Australia in early 1800's. There was also a son of his, Thomas, who joined the Hudson Bay Co. in the later 1800s, and was never heard from again. I live in Nowra, NSW, Austrlia, but was born in Tasmania where Capt. John Laughton settled. Re family: Has anyone got a Sewell Laughton (Spellings vary hugely) who married Mariah Parish? In about 1836 or so? Not sure I remember right, but I think they settled in Ohio or somewhere out there. I think I may be descended from his first marriage, and would like to compare notes. One of their children was David. (IGI resources.) help?

I came across this page when I checking out domaine names. I know virtually nothing about the Laughton side of my family. My father's name was George Laughton. He was born in 1910 in Yuma, Arizona. Isn't high tech wonderful. My grandfather's name was John Laughton who emigrated from the Orkney Islands at the turn of the last century, settling in Fort William (now Thunder Bay) Ontario. He had two sons, Bill Laughton who moved to the Los Angeles area in the 1950's, and John Carrel who still lives in Thunder Bay. John was adopted as an infant; hence the name Carrel. My Uncle Bill's widow Alexina Laughton still lives in California. Since they had two daughters, Alexina is the only one left with the Orkney Laughton name in North America. John Laughton, my grandfather, came from a farm in Orkney called East'rbist'r. We have
documents showing that the farm was worked by a gent named "John Lauchtane" in the mid 1400's. The Laughtons still work the same farm today. We still stay in touch and visit, and I will pass them the address of this website. We might be related, but as likely the similarity in the name could be the result of some medieval monkish monkeying. If you know of any connection I'd be pleased to hear. Cheers Al French

I am Chris Laughton one of the last, I thought, in a long line of Laughtons in England with a family tree which has been researched going back to 1481 and the Balif of Worcester. This is my first time on the internet and I was surprised to see so many of you out there. My family is from a line of Laughton's in South Australia. Our ancestors came to South Australia in the 1830s from England and were involved in pastoral activities and stock and station agencies. Edward Laughton was auctioneer at the first cattle sale by auction in Adelaide in 1861 and on 14/7/1913 he sold the first ox at the openining of the new Abbotoir's yards.

My father, Herbert,(no middle name) had one brother, named William S.Laughton. Their father was Jerome Laughton, born in Orkney in 1834 and their mother was Jean (Smith) Laughton, also from Orkney. (The Islands just North of , and part of Scotland.) My father was born in 1887, in Walkerton, Ontario, Canada. Was a naturalized U.S. Citizen. I do not remember having a model airplane, we couldn't afford such. Our money went for food , rent and clothes. Paul Laughton has another cousin named Norm. I guess. My father had one brother, William Spence Laughton, of Detroit. With the Laughton name, you must be connected. My papers show neither of your grand or great grands, but they show only
the descendants of Gilbert Laughtan and Margaret (Miller) Laughtan, and

grandfather, he and wife Margaret lived at Vigga, a 56 acre farm in Holm

Smith, in Orkney, then shortly after, departed for Canada, where they
settled in Walkerton, Ontario. My father, Herbert was born there. He left
home at 17, worked in Toronto, and Detroit for a couple of years as a Reed
and Rattan furniture maker, then went to Los Angeles, continuing in the
same trade, where he met and married my mother, Gladys (Nichols) , called
Dickie.They had nine children, I am the third, Bruce Norman Laughton, and
the ninth child, Dorothy,and her husband Dennis Cunningham, also live in
Cupertino. Twenty years ago, I went to Orkney, via Scotland, to locate the
place my grandfather was born and lived until in his forties. My father
only knew that his father had come from Orkney, the Islands just north of
Scotland. In the Scots Record Office in Edinburgh, I learned where in
Orkney only because I knew Jerome had married Jean Smith. Seems there are
so many Laughtons in Orkney it would have been a 3 month job to locate
Jerome,however,the man looked up Smith (He did not know there were Smiths
in Orkney) and found their wedding record, placing them. My wife and I
went by train and Bus to the north end of Scotland, then Ferry to
Mainland, where we met several descendants of my grandfathers brothers and
sisters. They treated us wonderfully. We still correspond.Since then, I
have been corresponding with two Canadian Laughtons who have done much
geneologic search, both been to Orkney, and are descended from brothers of
my grandfather Jerome. One is Paul Laughton of Ottawa, the other Ivan
Laughton of Nelson, B.C. Both have sent me charts of our common
descendants. If you wish, and you think it possible your ancestors came

When I looked it up in a book on heraldry in our local library, it said that Laughton came from an old Saxon word Leactun meaning leek enclosure! Laughton of Bristol, ME (born 6 Dec 1821) who married Hawes Atwood, a mariner from Wellfleet, MA (Cape Cod) on 7 Dec 1848. The parents of Eliza J. were Thomas Laughton and Lydia Yates, married on 26 Nov 1818 in Bristol. H. Atwood was Eliza's second husband. She was probably the young window of another Cape Cod man with the last name of Hawes. Any help you can offer is much appreciated. I am willing to pay for your time and trouble .

I have been doing my genealogy search on and off for a few years and have traced back to Orkney Islands in the late 1770s. My family was Peter Laughton who married Isabella Brown they lived in Stromness. Peter was a seaman and then a captain of a ship. His third son John left Stromness in 1834 on the Stirling Castle and desserted in Sydney in October 1835 thank goodness he did the ship ran aground off the Queensland coast. The captain of the ship was Captain Fraser the husband of Eliza Fraser who was travelling with him and was captured bythe local aboriginal tribes and lived with them until she was rescued. I visited Orkney in September 1997 and had a wonderful time just seeing where I came from. I engaged a genealogist Alison McCallum in Stromness to do some further searching for me after I left but we have drawn a blank at the moment. I would be interested to hear from anyone with an interest in the laughton name or with connections to my family. I live in Sydney Australia but my father came from the town of Laughtondale near Windsor in New South Wales.

The earliest LAUGHTON I have is Charles LAUGHTON, born aprox. 1819 in Stonesfield, Oxfordshire, England. This particular branch then mirgrated to Derbyshire and finally ended up in North Yorkshire. She is the only daughter of Frank Laughton who was born in Engla nd. Somehow, we're related to Charles Laughton-the actor. I think my grandfather was a cousin or something. I have no lost relatives, my forebears, and then laterly my wife Beulah, having kept a good trail of the family. We hail from Tickhill in the West riding of Yorkshire (up to the middle of the last century), and before that from the nearby village of Laughton en le Morthen. The family tree which we have starts in 1372.

The information we both have clearly comes from the same sourse. The basic pedigree I have is headed "Pedigree of Laughton, of Laughton, Eastfield, Howarth Grange, and Letwell."

As I recall, this pedigree was published in a volume called "The Pedigrees of South Yorkshire Families". If you have access to this, or a copy of this pedigree, you will note that the last line sets out the children of Edmund Laughton. To my knowledge, only Alfred Nelson Laughton, the fourth son, had children. He himself had only one son, my grandfather. Despite my father being one of his six sons, at the next generation there is only my elder brother, John, myself and a cousin, John. Both these Johns are in England. If you and I are related, we have, I think , to go back at least to Edmund's great great Uncles. Our own line is traced back to the Robert de Laughton to which you referred.

Glad to see this web site! I'll have to talk to our family historian, Norm Laughton, and get more details, but from what I remember our ancestry goes back to the Orkney Islands. I believe there was some discussion that the Orkney Islands were par t of Norway originally and that our name was Lofthane (not sure on the spelling there) and Anglicised to Laughton. Anyone who knows of Grandma Dickie (Gladys) and Pappy, their 7 sons and two daughters, I am a decendant of that group. The seven sons included: Ben, Bob, Norman, Keith, Donald, Richard, and Ray. The two daughters are: Joyce Burger and Dot (Dorothy) Cunn ingham. The eldest son Ben, had two sons: Ed and Rich. Ed had two son: Glen and Ron. I am Glen and live in Seattle and work as a Computer Network Consultant, and my brother Ron lives in L.A., California as a Lotus Notes developer. In 1837, when he started down Yonge street with his armed friends to shake up the government, they were met by a government force. The news that they were coming was brought by a John Laughton, who was a magistrate at the time.
